USGA to add new limits on drivers
The U.S. Golf Association, in a letter to golf club manufacturers dated Aug. 31, has proposed that moment of inertia (resistance to twisting) in driver heads be limited.
First the USGA imposed a limit on the so-called trampoline effect in drivers, now it is set to introduce a limit on lack of twisting. Why? Because lack of clubhead twisting means that drives go too straight on mis-hits.
Since November 1998, driver heads have been restricted to .830 coefficient of restitution (or its equivalent). This COR number is a measurement of the trampoline effect, or rebound effect, in the face of a driver. Clubs with faces that surpass the .830 measurement and ruled to be nonconforming.
