PRO REPORT
Montgomerie Doubtful for PGA Championship
GLENEAGLES, Scotland � Colin Montgomerie pulled out of
the Johnnie Walker Championship on Thursday because of
a hand injury and may miss next week's PGA Championship.
Montgomerie, playing for the first time since finishing
runner-up at last month's British Open, hurt the fingers
of his right hand on a shot off the 18th fairway in the
first round. He planned to have X-rays after returning
to London later Thursday.
His Ryder Cup teammate David Howell also pulled out
injured at Gleneagles, saying he too may miss next
week's major at Baltusrol.
"Hopefully I can rest up over the next three or four
days and manage to go to America on schedule. If not,
I won't," Montgomerie said. "I hurt both my index
finger and my middle finger. All three middle fingers
have all bruised and swollen up."
Montgomerie said his grip slipped at the top of his
swing.
"It's got to be one of the worst shots I've ever hit,"
he said.
Howell withdrew after Wednesday's pro-am because of an
abdominal muscle injury which he believes he sustained
during the U.S. Open in June. He withdrew from that
event and has not played since.
Howell said he felt he could not play five straight days
and was doubtful whether he would play at next week's
PGA, adding that he may target a return at the following
week's NEC Invitational in Akron, Ohio.
"It's going to be touch and go. We will have to wait and
see," Howell said.
