Golf: Spunky newcomer challenges the Ryder Cup http://www.iht.com/articles/2005/09/21/sports/golf.php
The Presidents Cup begins on Thursday, and favorable comparisons with the Ryder Cup are on the agenda, along with the usual concerns about Tiger Woods's ability to play nicely with others.

Instead, they are back in Virginia 22 months later at a club where they have yet to win. The closest the Presidents Cup came to bad blood was here in 2000 when Singh's caddie, Paul Tesori, walked on course wearing a cap with "Tiger Who?" stitched on it.

Woods was not amused, declining to concede at least one very short putt and beating Singh in the singles as he and the Americans won handily.

"At the time I certainly didn't appreciate it," Woods said at a news conference on Tuesday. "I thought it wasn't real respectful. I know he tried to do it in fun, but I didn't take it that way. I went out there and beat him 2 and 1, so that's my response to it."

The Ryder Cup was created in 1927 by an English seed merchant and late convert to golf named Samuel Ryder as a way of determining whether Britons or Americans were better at a game the Scots invented. The Americans eventually settled that issue as their dominance forced the Brits to seek reinforcements from Ireland and then from the Continent.
