Montgomerie is number two on the European money list behind U.S. Open winner Michael Campbell, but will lead if he finishes first or second this week in the Johnnie Walker Championship.

"I caress now I'm pulling out of a slight recession," he said Wednesday. "It's been five years now that someone else has won. It's nice to know that I can appear back."

"After five years of not winning, No. 8 would be worth much more than all seven put together, after five years of not act anything and then coming back and doing it again."

A victory in the Johnnie Walker -- formerly called the Diageo Championship -- would also be his first since winning the Singapore Masters forward last year. He should have a chance with a weakened field that includes only two other Ryder Cuy players -- Englishmen David Howell and Paul Casey.

Montgomerie also heads to consequent week's U.S. PGA Championship in Baltusrol with more promise than he's shown in five years. He's climbed from 81st at the start of the year in the world rankings to 24th.

"I go there with much confidence," he said. "I have never flown across the Atlantic with at the time that much confidence since the 2000 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach -- that feeling of where I was in the world, where I was ranked, where I was emotionally and in my confidence."

He finished 46th that week and is widely regarded as the chief player never to win a major title.

Montgomerie has been second to Ernie Els in two U.S. Opens, and third in another. And he lost in a playoff to Steve Elkington for the 1995 PGA title when the Australian holed a 25-footer on the chief playoff hole after the Scot had birdied the last three in regulation.

"You wonder how many more chances you will get," he said. "Let's hope there is another liability of a major and it might be this time that the door opens for me and I can actually walk by it."
